What does Cutting Board Gel do?

Cutting Board Gel is a surface conditioner formulated with food-grade mineral oil and beeswax. The mineral oil moisturizes and softens dry wood fibers while the beeswax seals the surface and adds a light protective layer. It is designed for regular, convenient conditioning of cutting boards, butcher blocks, and wooden kitchen surfaces.

How do I apply Cutting Board Gel?

Start with a clean, dry surface. Apply the gel using the applicator brush or pad, working it into the wood in circular motions for full coverage. Allow the gel to absorb for 30 minutes, then wipe away any excess with a clean cloth and buff lightly. The surface is ready to use once it feels smooth and dry to the touch.

How often should I reapply?

Every four to six weeks under regular use, or any time the surface begins to look dry or dull. A simple test: if water soaks into the wood rather than beading on the surface, it is time to condition. Boards used daily for heavy food prep may benefit from more frequent application.

What surfaces can I use it on?

Cutting Board Gel is suitable for wood cutting boards, butcher blocks, charcuterie boards, wooden bowls, wooden utensils, and other food-contact wood surfaces. It is not intended for raw unfinished furniture or exterior wood.

What makes Refined Walnut Oil different from mineral oil?

Refined Walnut Oil is a drying oil, meaning it cures through oxidation rather than simply moisturizing and evaporating. When applied to wood, it penetrates the fibers and polymerizes as it reacts with oxygen, hardening inside the wood and forming a protective matrix. Each application builds on the last, creating a finish that becomes more durable over time. Mineral oil conditions temporarily; walnut oil builds lasting protection.

How do I apply Refined Walnut Oil?

Apply a thin, even coat to the clean, dry surface using a clean cloth. Work the oil into the grain, ensuring full coverage. Allow it to penetrate for 15 to 20 minutes, then wipe away any excess before it becomes tacky. Do not apply thick coats: excess oil that sits on the surface rather than absorbing will slow curing and leave a sticky residue. One to two thin coats is sufficient for most surfaces.

How long does it take to cure?

Initial penetration takes 15 to 30 minutes. Full curing, where the oil hardens and the surface becomes water-resistant, typically completes within 24 to 72 hours depending on temperature and humidity. You will know the finish is cured when water beads on the surface and the wood feels smooth and dry with a natural satin sheen.

How should I store Refined Walnut Oil?

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight with the cap sealed tightly after each use. Because walnut oil is a drying oil that cures through oxygen exposure, extended contact with air can cause the product to thicken over time. Shelf life is approximately 12 months from opening.

Is Refined Walnut Oil safe for people with nut allergies?

In refined walnut oil, the proteins that typically trigger nut allergic reactions have been denatured through the refining process, making a reaction unlikely for most people with walnut sensitivities. Individuals with extreme nut allergies should proceed with caution and consult a healthcare provider before use. If a completely nut-free option is needed, Cutting Board Gel is formulated with mineral oil and beeswax and contains no nut-derived ingredients.

How is this different from Refined Walnut Oil alone?

Refined Walnut Oil and Beeswax combines the penetrating, curing properties of walnut oil with the surface-sealing properties of beeswax in a single product. The walnut oil works inside the wood fiber; the beeswax seals the surface against water and debris. It is a single-step product for conditioning and sealing together, particularly well-suited for boards that are already in good condition and do not need deep restoration.

How do I apply it?

Apply to the clean, dry surface using a clean cloth or the included applicator. Work the blend into the wood in circular motions, then buff lightly with the pad for an even finish. Allow 20 to 30 minutes for absorption, then wipe away any excess. The surface is ready to use once it feels smooth and dry.

2-Step Cutting Board Care System

Why use two products instead of one?

The 2-Step Cutting Board Care System uses each product for what it does best. Refined Walnut Oil penetrates deep into the wood fibers, restoring moisture and beginning the curing process that builds structural protection from within. The Walnut Oil and Beeswax blend then seals the surface, locking in the oil's protection and adding a beeswax barrier against water and wear. One product conditions from the inside; the other protects from the outside.

How do I use the 2-Step System?

Step 1: Apply Refined Walnut Oil to the clean, dry surface. Wipe it into the grain with a clean cloth and allow it to penetrate for 15 to 20 minutes. Wipe away any excess.

Step 2: Once the oil has fully absorbed, apply the Refined Walnut Oil and Beeswax blend using the applicator pad. Buff into the surface, then wipe away any excess. Allow the finish to set for 20 to 30 minutes before use.

For boards that are heavily dried out or being treated for the first time, allow the oil in Step 1 to absorb fully before moving to Step 2. The board may absorb more oil than expected on the first treatment.

Food Contact Safe Wood Finishing Oil

What is in this formula and why?

Food Contact Safe Wood Finishing Oil is formulated with tung oil, refined walnut oil, beeswax, and cetyl alcohol. Tung oil and walnut oil are both drying oils that cure through polymerization, building a hardened finish inside the wood. Beeswax seals the surface. Cetyl alcohol, a fatty alcohol used as an emulsifier, improves the consistency of the formula and helps it penetrate evenly. The fully cured finish is food-contact safe and suitable for surfaces used in direct food preparation.

How do I apply Food Contact Safe Wood Finishing Oil?

Wipe on a thin, even coat with a clean cloth. Allow the oil to penetrate the wood for 10 to 15 minutes, then wipe away any excess. Apply additional coats for added depth, allowing each coat to absorb fully before applying the next. Most surfaces reach the desired finish in two to three coats.

When is the finish fully cured and food-contact safe?

The finish is food-contact safe once fully cured. Curing typically completes within 24 to 72 hours after the final coat, depending on temperature and humidity. A cured surface will feel dry and smooth, and water will bead rather than soak in. Do not use the surface for food preparation until the finish is fully cured.

General Care Tips

How do I clean wood surfaces before applying any product?

Wash with warm water and mild dish soap. Rinse thoroughly and allow the surface to dry completely before applying any oil or conditioner. Never submerge wood in water or place it in a dishwasher. Moisture trapped beneath a fresh coat of oil can cause the wood to swell, warp, or crack over time.

How do I know when a surface needs conditioning?

If water soaks into the surface rather than beading, it is time to condition. Other signs include a dry or rough texture, a faded or gray appearance, and visible checking or small cracks along the grain. Catching it early makes conditioning easier and extends the life of the board significantly.

Can I use these products on all wood types?

Yes. All Rowdy Rooster Woodworks kitchen products are suitable for maple, walnut, cherry, teak, acacia, bamboo, and other common cutting board and kitchen wood types. When treating an unfamiliar wood or a surface with an existing finish you are unsure about, test a small inconspicuous area first to confirm the finish looks as expected before treating the full surface.
